Prof. Tim Bale on Starmer Future

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is “probably safe, at least for this morning and today”, according to Tim Bale, Professor of Politics at Queen Mary University of London. Starmer is due to confront one of his main rivals, Health Secretary Wes Streeting, at a behind-closed-doors meeting today, before the unveiling of a legislative agenda that many people in the ruling Labour party don’t back the Prime Minister to deliver. A slew of ministerial resignations have so far failed to force Starmer’s downfall this week yet he faces another day of intense pressure. In an interview on Bloomberg Daybreak Europe, Bale said Starmer has managed, “to some extent, temporarily perhaps” to rally the Parliamentary Labour Party behind him, and that a challenge from Streeting is unlikely.
